Hear the Honors College Roar!

Last Sunday October 10, the Honors College took an adventure into the city to watch the world famous Lion King Broadway show. The honors students travelled by train and met up at the Minskoff Theatre right off of Times Square.

Sitting in the mezzanine gave the perfect view to see all that the Lion King had to offer. The show started off with the famous song Circle of Life and included characters that were in the audience. The bigger animals, such as the elephants and the giraffes walked down the main aisles of the orchestra pit while the rams journeyed from the mezzanine all the way to the stage in the opening number.

Much like the classic animated movie, the story follows the journey of Simba, the future king, and his family in a battle for power over the kingdom. Right before the intermission, Simba’s Uncle Scar plotted his brother, the King’s, demise. Sadly, Simba’s father dies and Simba must run away before he too could die. Then, the famous characters Timon and Pumbaa appear and sing Hakuna Matata as the curtains close for the break.

After the break, the story continues with Scar ruling over the land and how unhappy everyone is and shows Simba out in the wild with Timon and Pumbaa. Eventually, Simba runs into his old playmate Nala, and she convinces him to become king, as the land thought he was dead. The show ends full circle with Simba becoming king and replicating the opening scene, but this time with Simba and Nala’s child being held up instead of like Simba at the beginning.

The Lion King on Broadway was an excellent show and the honors students had a blast!
