Last Thursday, nine Honors College students took a trip to Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson to visit the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. One of the first off-campus Honors events this semester, the students were excited to once again take advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the Honors College!
The Blaze is a breathtaking and larger-than-life spectacle of intricate artwork created using an unconventional medium- pumpkins! More than 7,000 pumpkins were used to construct city landscapes, replicate world-famous works of art and architecture, and display hundreds of variations of the well-loved traditional jack-o’-lantern. The Blaze experience is made complete by an original soundtrack which plays on speakers located all throughout the installations, setting the mood and bringing life to the stories told by the pumpkins.
In the sixty minutes it took the Honors College students to traverse through the Blaze, they did their fair share of oohing and aahing, took more pictures than they know what to do with, snacked on delicious locally-made treats, and had a blast getting into the Halloween spirit!
